A Student Handbook for Writing in Biology, Third Edition Knisely, Karin A user's guide to the human genome; Nature Genetics supplement Tyra G Wolfsberg, Kris A Wetterstrand, Mark S Guyer, Francis S Collins & Andreas D Baxevanis Nature Publishing Group/Macmillan Online Publishing; 2002; pp82 The primary aim of A User’s Guide to the Human Genome is to provide the reader with an elementary hands-on guide for browsing and analyzing data produced by the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium and other systematic sequencing efforts. The majority of this supplement is devoted to a series of worked examples, providing an overview of the types of data available, details on how these data can be browsed, and stepby- step instructions for using many of the most commonly-used tools for sequence-based discovery. The major web portals featured throughout include the National Center for Biotechnology Information Map Viewer, the University of California, Santa Cruz Genome Browser, and the European Bioinformatics Institute’s Ensembl system, along with many others that are discussed in the individual examples. It is hoped that readers will become more familiar with these resources, allowing them to apply the strategies used in the examples to advance their own research programs. Book Description This book presents a clear and concise story of the overall management of colorectal cancer covering causality and genetics, prevention, and surgical, chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments, with the patient at the centre. It is contemporary, scientific and hightly practical. It peers into the future in order to harness scientific innovations and translate them into the clinic as soon as possible. Rating 3 Stars from Doody From The Critics Doody Review Services Reviewer: Mary F. Mulcahy, MD (Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine) Description: This basic review of colorectal cancer presents all aspects of the disease in an easy to read, well illustrated manner. Purpose: The purpose is to present evidence-based information on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of colorectal cancer in a concise manner. Since survival with colorectal cancer is improving, many patients are being managed by a multimodality team instead of solely by an oncologist. This book is effective at providing a resource for those not as well versed on colorectal cancer as a medical oncologist would be. Audience: This book is written for primary care physicians, nurses, dietitians and any healthcare provider who may manage a patient with colorectal cancer. The content of the book is appropriate for this audience. The authors are from a variety of backgrounds and include gastroenterologists, oncologists, and primary care physicians. Features: The book covers every aspect of colorectal cancer from a management standpoint. Risk factors, screening, and primary care, as well as standard and innovative treatments. The book presents the topics clearly, using a generous number of illustrations and photographs, as well as bulleted tables and lists of further reading. It does not however, include specific references. Assessment: This is a very well written and illustrated book covering the basics of colorectal cancer. I'm sure it will be useful to many healthcare providers who support oncologists. The information, however, is at risk of becoming outdated quickly with new screening modalities (colonography) and treatment plans. Accreditation Kerr, David J.; Young , Annie M.; Hobbs , F.D. Proper classification and staging allow the physician to determine treatment more appropriately, evaluate results of management more reliably, and compare worldwide statistics reported from various institutions on a local, regional, and national basis more confidently. The fully revised and updated Sixth Edition of the AJCC Cancer Staging Manual brings together all currently available information on staging of cancer at various anatomic sites and incorporates newly acquired knowledge on the etiology and pathology of cancer. As more is learned, cancer staging must adapt to accommodate new information and this revised edition provides an evidence-based staging system based upon the established tenets of TNM classification. All of the TNM staging information included in the Sixth Edition is uniform between the AJCC and the UICC (International Union Against Cancer). Organized by disease site into 48 comprehensive chapters, the Sixth Edition features much-anticipated, major revisions to the chapters on melanoma and breast cancer. Numerous new line drawings illustrate key anatomic sites throughout the text. Additional user-friendly enhancements include: * a concise summary of changes in the TNM classification since the previous edition at the start of every chapter * color-coordinated page tabs for easy access between chapters * a CD-ROM packaged with each Manual containing printable copies of each of the book's 45 Staging Forms for both individual and institutional use * a comprehensive index The Sixth Edition of the AJCC Cancer Staging Manual and Handbook remains the essential reference for oncologists, pathologists, surgeons, cancer registrars, and medical professionals worldwide to assure that all those taking care of cancer patients will be trained in the language of cancer staging Book Info (American Joint Committee on Cancer) Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte, NC. From The Critics Doody Review Services Reviewer: Amy L Halverson, MD (Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine) Description: This is the updated version of the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) staging system for solid organ tumors. The previous edition was published in 1997. Purpose: AJCC has long provided a standard for tumor staging. Advances in the diagnosis and treatment and increased understanding of certain prognostic indicators necessitate periodic revision of staging systems. This new edition contains clarifications on anatomic descriptions and revisions of the TNM definitions for many specific body sites. Audience: This book is essential for cancer registrars and any physicians, whether in training or in practice for many years, who are involved in the care of cancer patients. In the United States, the AJCC-TNM classification system is the primary staging system used in Commission on Cancer approved hospitals. Features: This sixth edition is in the same basic format as the fifth edition and now has colored headings, section tabs, and improved graphics that make it more reader friendly. A summary of changes made to the manual since the previous edition is highlighted at the beginning of each chapter. The first chapter describes the general basis of the staging system. The second chapter gives a limited overview of cancer survival analysis. This chapter has a few graphs illustrating survival curves and would benefit from more illustrations. The explanations, although very basic, may be confusing to the reader who does not already have a good understanding of survival analysis methodology. The remainder of the book is divided into sections according to organ system with chapters for specific body sites. A brief review of anatomy and the details of tumor, lymph node, and metastatic classification are given for each body site. Relevant tumor characteristics and prognostic factors are also discussed. Each chapter includes staging forms to be used to record the TNM classification. Also included is a CD-ROM that has the staging forms for each body site in PDF format. Assessment: This is an essential reference for surgeons and medical oncologists. The sixth edition contains important staging system revisions and clarifications. |
