Postdoc opening

Looking for a postdoctoral fellow to join a funded project on cellulose synthesis and growth anisotropy.
A major aim uses maize roots: growth anisotropy is manipulated physiologically, quantified, and the underlying cellulose characterized by extant methods (microscopy, biochemistry) and potentially by methods to be developed (X-ray diffraction, neutron scattering).
A second aim uses tobacco BY-2 cells: individual cells are grown in microfluidic chambers and cellulose synthesis assessed both by imaging tagged CESA genes as well as by, potentially, a 3-dimensional polarized-light instrument in development by a collaborator. With the tractable mechanics of the single cell, the project hopes to validate a theoretical model for controlling growth anisotropy.
The preferred candidate will be able to join the lab around Sept. 2017, will have a Ph.D. in a relevant field, and will have experience with some of the following: Cell wall biochemistry, quantitative imaging, tobacco BY-2 culture, biomechanics.

My lab is at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, a vibrant scientific and cultural location.
Applicants may send their cv and cover letter to me: Baskin@bio.umass.edu.

Two postdoctoral positions are available at the University of Georgia in Athens GA, USA.

The projects focus on genes and regulatory pathways that lead to fruit size and shape variation using primarily the tomato crop as a model. One project focuses on the effects of structural variation in tomato genomes. The goals are to identify structural variants and associate them with phenotypes. The second project focuses on mining of ancestral tomato germplasm for crop improvement traits. The goals of the latter project are to recognize in semi-domesticated germplasm alleles that lead to tomato improvement.
Both projects will integrate classical and quantitative genetics, QTL and RNA-Seq, molecular biology, genome editing, plant development and bioinformatic techniques.
Review of applicants will begin September 1, 2017 and continue until filled.

EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION
Doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in molecular biology, genetics, plant biology, or a related scientific field.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE
Experience in molecular biology, cloning, genetic mapping as well as basic skills in bioinformatics required. Effective written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills required. Experience in plant development and quantitative genetics desired.

TO APPLY
Please send a single PDF document to Dr. Esther van der Knaap (vanderkn@uga.edu). This single PDF document should include:
1) a cover letter describing your previous experience, summary of research accomplishments, and interest in this position;
2) your CV;
3) the names and contact information of three references.

a Postdoc

funded for an initial time period of 3 years. Payment will be according to the German TV-L13 (full-time).

The position is available from January 2018.

Plant biomass contains important industrially relevant hemicelluloses. Plant tissues differ in their hemicellulose structure and utilizing our newly installed MALDI imaging instrument (Bruker Rapiflex) we are looking for a person, who will want to image hemicellulose distribution, also in numerous plant mutants.
You will join a well-funded international research team in an outstanding scientific environment.

Your profile:
Applicants should hold an excellent Master degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or comparable topics. Candidates should have experience in mass spectrometry – experimental experience in MALDI-TOF is of advantage. The successful candidate should have a very high level of motivation to perform creative basic research. Candidates should be team players, have good communication skills and excellent knowledge of the English language. Additional experience in molecular biology, protein biochemistry and/or carbohydrate analytics is preferred.
The position will require attention to detail, strong skills in instrumental knowledge, experimental design and troubleshooting, and an ability to pursue research projects independently.

Applications including a motivation letter and a CV containing a publication list and experimental experience should be submitted as a single pdf-file to m.pauly@hhu.de.

Post-doctoral position in Plant Developmental Biology

A post-doc position is available in the group of Rishi Bhalerao starting immediately to work on the role of secretion of auxin carriers and cell wall components in regulation of differential cell elongation in model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. The project builds on previous work in the lab: Gendre et al PNAS (2011), Boutte et al PNAS (2013) and Gendre et al Plant Cell (2013), Jonsson et al Plant Cell (2017). We have isolated several cell elongation mutants in Arabidopsis in which components of vesicular trafficking machinery are defective and which impact cell wall composition, hormonal responses and differential growth during apical hook development. The project aims to characterise these mutants using cell biological and biochemical and genetical approaches. The applicant must have a strong background in use of confocal microscopy and molecular biology and experience of working with Arabidopsis is essential.

The selected candidate will join a team that involves scientists from the group of Rishi Bhalerao at Umea Plant Science Center in Sweden and the group of Prof. Jinxing Lin at the Beijing Forestry University. The work will involve multidisciplinary approaches that range from cell biology, chemical genomics and modelling in the project. The applicant will work in Beijing and part-time in Umea in Sweden.

Umeå Plant Science Center (www.upsc.se) is one of the world leading centers for research in plant biology. UPSC has state of the art equipment in genomics, confocal microscopy, metabolomics and proteomics and excellent plant growth facilities. UPSC has 150 researchers including 50 post-doctoral fellows and equal number of Ph. D and Master students. UPSC has a very international environment with researchers from 37 countries. Umeå also provides close access to outdoor activities such skiing, hiking, kayaking, etc.

Interested applicants should send cv with statement of interest and description of prior research and names of 3 referees.

Please send your applications to Rishikesh P. Bhalerao
