Mechanical stress and the Lateral Root Initiation Network in Arabidopsis: Patterning under Pressure.

A fundamental question in biology is how stem cells are specified and maintained. The Plant Developmental Biology group has extensive experience in the identification and analysis of stem cell factors in plants (http://www.wageningenur.nl/en/Expertise-Services/Chair-groups/PlantSciences/Plant-Developmental-Biology.htm).
For this project, the group will collaborate extensively with Dr. J. Vermeer in Zurich. Within the project, formation of lateral roots by an interaction between local signalling molecules, physical stresses and transcription factors will be analysed using gene editing, genomics and cell biology approaches. This work is expected to yield novel insights into the generation of root architecture, a key determinant of plant yield and resistance.

The candidate for this 4-year PhD position is enthusiastic and motivated, and preferably experienced in molecular biology, developmental biology.

Postdoctoral position: genetic basis of diatom behavioral responses

Background
Many pennate diatoms are motile and respond to a wide range of external stimuli by alterations in movement rate, and/or by displaying tactic or phobic responses. Typically diatom populations are genetically highly diverse and display significant phenotypic plasticity in their response to environmental cues. However, very little is known about the genetic mechanisms contributing to behavioral responses to such stimuli in natural populations. Environmental changes challenge organisms and drive adaptation to new conditions, suggesting that natural biodiversity may be a source of adaptive alleles acting through phenotypic plasticity and/or micro-evolution. Two approaches are commonly used. First, crosses between strains differing for a given trait allow to disentangle genetic and environmental components. Another way to discover adaptive alleles is to survey large ecotype collections and to use association genetics to identify loci of interest. Both of these two genetic approaches are based on the use of biodiversity and may eventually help us in identifying the genes that diatoms use to respond to a range of external stimuli.

PostDoc Project
Within the context of an interdisciplinary project to discover the genetic basis of diatom life history we have defined a project that is open to a PostDoc researcher for the duration of two years, and can possibly be extended to three years.

This project has two objectives:
Firstly, the candidate helps to develop a high throughput platform to monitor behavioral responses in the model diatom Seminavis robusta.
Secondly, the candidate uses a combined GWAS and QTL mapping approach to identify genes underlying the response to infochemicals.

Profile of candidate
The work in the project will have both an extensive experimental as well as a strong statistical character. Therefore, a good working knowledge of quan¬titative genetics as well as experience with/interest in working with cultures will be impor¬tant. Candidates should have a PhD degree in Biology, Bio-engineering, Plant Breeding, Quantitative Genetics, Evolu¬tionary Biology or related fields.
Candidates should be able to work in a multi-disci¬plinary team that contains biologists, statisticians, bioinforma¬ticians, geneticists, molecular biologists and chemists. Fluent English and good communication skills, oral and in writing, are essential.

Applications
Can be sent to Wim Vyverman at
Wim.Vyverman@ugent.be before November 30, 2015.

The University of Potsdam, Faculty of Science Institute of Biochemistry and Biology, Plant Physiology offers Ph.D. Position in Plant Cell Biology

Exact project start is negotiable, but should not be later than April 2016. The hours of work per week for the position amount to 26 hours. The position is limited to three years. The Salary Scale is 13 TVL (Area east). Contracts are time-limited according to § 2 Abs. 1 Academic Fixed-Term Contract Law (WissZeitVG).

Project Description
One Ph.D position is open in the lab of Dr. Michael Sauer on the topic of vacuolar protein transport in plants. The project aims to elucidate in detail a novel transport pathway which relies on the accessory protein MODIFIED TRANSPORT TO THE VACUOLE (MTV1) for vesicle generation at the trans-Golgi network. Preliminary evidence shows that the MTV1 pathway is unique to plants and is related to par-ticular physiological conditions. The work will molecularly and physiologically define this novel pathway using state of the art genetic, microscopic and biochemical methods. Because of the unique properties of the MTV1 pathway and its strict conservation within the plant kingdom, its in-depth characterization will yield im-portant insights into plant vacuolar transport and, moreover, give novel molecular details about the general process of vesicle generation.

Qualifications
• A MSc (or equivalent) degree in molecular biology or a closely related disci-pline.

Postdoc in plant molecular genetics with a focus on epigenetics and chromatin biology

We are looking for highly motivated individuals to join our ongoing research projects on chromatin function and epigenetics in plants. We study regulation of flowering time and stress physiology. Our projects focus on the function of Polycomb Group proteins and other chromatin modifying protein complexes. Polycomb Group proteins are major regulators of cell fate and differentiation and have been implicated in tumor formation in animals. We use forward genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology and genomics approaches to uncover the molecular mechanisms by which chromatin states affect gene expression and establish cellular identity. Our approaches involve diverse technologies ranging from transcriptome and epigenome profiling by next generation sequencing to mass spectrometry.

The position is open to an enthusiastic individual with a solid background in biochemistry, molecular biology or genetics. Candidates with strong interest in epigenetics, chromatin and epigenomics are especially encouraged to apply.
The position is associated with the research group of Lars Hennig at the Department of Plant Biology at the Swedish Agricultural University in Uppsala. The department offers a creative and stimulating international environment. Plant science is particularly strong in Uppsala and coordinated in the Linnean Center for Plant Biology. In addition, the Evolutionary Biology Centre and other institutes at Uppsala University make unique expertise locally available. With the Science for Life Laboratories in Uppsala and Stockholm we have access to most advanced technology platforms for genomics, proteomics, bioimaging and chemical biology.

Uppsala, Sweden’s fourth largest city, has two universities and with 35’000 students a very lively student atmosphere. Stockholm, the Venice-of-the-North, is not far away – it takes only 40 minutes by train. Stockholm international airport is also close by, 20 minutes by train from Uppsala, and has frequent connections to many international destinations.

Applications, including (1) CV, (2) a description of research experiences, (3) a statement of scientific interests as well as (4) contact information of two to three referees should be submitted by e-mail to Lars.Hennig@slu.se.

Postdoc position in Umea Plant Science Centre (UPSC), Stephanie Robert’s group

Characterization of novel molecular components involved in Arabidopsis development

Most organisms integrate environmental and endogenous stimuli via various signaling pathways that induce developmental responses. This is especially important in plants because of their sessile life style and their capacity to grow continuously and adapt their architecture according to the environmental conditions.
The long-term goal of our research is to understand the signaling mechanisms regulating plant growth and development (http://www.upsc.se/researchers/4647-stephanierobert-molecular-mechanisms-of-cell-elongation.html#publications).

The first phase of this project has already been performed - by applying an innovative chemical genomic strategy; some novel small molecules have been identified as potential growth regulators modulating plant development. Several mutants resistant to the effect of one of the molecule have been selected, and the mutations identified. As the continuation of the project, the candidate postdoc fellow will aim at characterizing the functional role of novel molecular actors involved in specific developmental processes.
This project will be greatly benefited by the complementary knowledge and research experience already present at the Umeå Plant Science Centre (http://www.upsc.se).
The proposed work is likely to reveal compelling new insights at the forefront of signaling processes in plant.

Qualifications: The position is of two years duration (one + one) and is available from now. Applicants require a doctoral degree in molecular biology or a closely related discipline. Furthermore, applicants should be proficient in English and should have the ability to work independently as well as in collaboration with others.
Place of work: Umeå, Sweden
Contact: Applications including CV, description of research experience and contact details for two references should be sent to Dr. Stephanie Robert: Stephanie.Robert@slu.se
