Book Info
Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA. Brandon/Hill Medical List minimal-core, first-purchase selection (#162). Former edition, c1998, was written by Jean D. Wilson. Comprehensive textbook provides a condensed and authoritative discussion of the management of clinical endocrinopathies. Includes a new and expanded diabetes section, data on aging, fertility, and more.

о книге: Reviewer: Jennifer M. Cunningham, MD (University of Chicago Medical Center)
Description: This updated edition of a general endocrine textbook presents normal endocrine function at both the molecular and clinical levels, as well as states of endocrine pathology. It is a significant update from the prior version published in 1998.
Purpose: The purpose is to update the previous edition using a fresh approach to the presentation of the essentials of clinical endocrinology. The stated goal is to incorporate molecular and physiological science into scholarly yet practical presentations on disease management. New authors were invited to prepare many of the chapters, so this work is more than just adding new information to previously written chapters. Overall, the book is successful in achieving its goals, although there certainly is variability from chapter to chapter in the practical use of the extensive knowledge.
Audience: The authors do not specify an audience, but clearly it is appropriate for a wide range of readers, from students to practitioners of endocrinology. For students, it would be particularly beneficial in its presentation of basic endocrine physiology, as well as a reference for different disease states. For endocrine practitioners, it is useful for the details it gives regarding many of the disease states as well as the controversies and pitfalls in testing for these. For non-endocrine practitioners, however, the details may obscure the basics of the endocrine evaluations for specific disease states and they may find this book less user-friendly.
Features: Most chapters begin with an explanation of the physiology and/or pathophysiology of the endocrine organ and its disease states. The authors then discuss the clinical characteristics, including treatment and diagnosis, of endocrine disease states. The scope of topics is excellent, including chapters on such subjects as endocrinology and aging and endocrine responsive cancer as opposed to organization simply by individual endocrine organs. The book differs from others in the length of its chapters, which are broken down into smaller sections and subsections. The purpose seems to be to locate all items related to a given subject within the same chapter. However, this can make it somewhat cumbersome to use, and readers in search of a particular topic will find the index far more helpful than the table of contents, which lists only the major chapter headings. The figures and illustrations are of good quality and are given adequate emphasis. Inexplicably, there is a large section of color photographs and figures after chapter 12. These are of good quality but unlikely to be appreciated by most readers due to their seemingly random location in the book. They should be placed, with appropriate notation in the table of contents, at the back or front of the book. Despite the book's stated goals, there is a lot of variability among chapters regarding clinical utility. The thyroid neoplasia section of Chapter 13 seems to focus on guiding a practitioner in patient management, with subsections labeled follow-up strategy. The section on menopause, on the other hand, fails to comment on any of the very relevant nonhormonal treatments available for menopausal symptoms.
Assessment: Overall, this is a quality book and provides a good update in the major areas of endocrinology. Its presentation of the science of endocrinology is excellent. The clinical application of this science is excellent in some chapters but difficult to distinguish in others. It is certainly a worthwhile contribution to the field, but those in search of practical direction regarding disease management may need to consult other books as well, depending on the subject matter.

Booknews
The late Dr. Maxwell Wintrobe (d.1986) would have been proud of this continuation of his classic which, in its first edition of 1942, did much to establish hematology as a subspecialty of internal medicine. The present revised and expanded edition (previous editions, through the 8th in 1991, were simply titled Clinical Hematology) reflects the progress in hematology over the past decade, with up-to-date discussions on topics from neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases of the hematopoietic system through immune deficiency disorders, with new treatments of transfusion, sideroblastic anemia, and hemochromatosis, among other clinical topics. Despite its title, it has always been as concerned with the basic science of hematology as with clinical practice, and the first 22 chapters (out of 88) provide a scientific basis for much of the material in the clinical sections that follow. Description: The 11th edition of this book continues to provide an outstanding resource to hematologists. It expands on the 10th edition published in 1998 with the addition of Web site references and the inclusion of gene array analysis in disease descriptions.
Purpose: This book continues the Wintrobe tradition of incorporating the history of hematology with newer advances. Complete descriptions of testing methods, normal conditions, and the clinicopathologic basis of disease are included. With the fast-paced advances in monoclonal antibody therapy, gene therapy, and targeted molecules, an updated edition was needed. This edition has managed to bring all this together along with Web-based references to guide readers to more information.
Audience: This is an essential book for all hematolgists. Fellows and clinical specialists in hematology may benefit as well. This is not the book for students wishing to learn the basics of hematology. All topics are covered in-depth and may be above the level of the student.
Features: The book begins with the basics, the recognition of normal states. Diseases of the red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets are covered. Information about transfusion medicine is also included. Thrombosis and hemostasis topics are well covered. As always, the authors are well-known and respected. The color plates are particularly striking.
Assessment: This a great addition to the Wintrobe tradition full of new, updated information and an essential item for any hematologist.

Review
'This book does what it says on the cover, it explores all areas of women's health not only contraception and the menopause but other health problems too.' Practice Nurse'... an excellent source of information for those working in women' health.' Practice Nurse'The ages from 40 to 65 are a stage in women's lives that medical literature does not often focus on. This book groups the perimenopausal years together in a way that makes clinical sense, and it covers a wide variety of the healthcare issues facing the carers these women will encounter ... Keeping up to date on evidence based guidelines for cancer screening can be a daunting task. This book does a good job reviewing the current research and explaining the latest guidelines.' From the Publisher
This book highlights the needs and healthcare concerns of women in their midlife. Women, in their middle ages, are often overlooked by medical practitioners. From the end of childbearing to old age, approximately ages 40 to 65, their health needs are complex and changing. This is a time of challenge and opportunity when the physician and woman working collaboratively can change her health and future. Midlife healthcare is far more than hormones. Healthy behaviours such as good nutrition and exercise can be promoted that will result in lower risk and sometimes improved care of heart disease, hypertension and diabetes. Adequate screening and treatment can prevent diseases and complications. The burgeoning literature on allopathic and complementary medicine is critically evaluated and compared to established medical care. Written by 20 primary care physicians, this book will help family practitioners provide the best possible healthcare for these women.

Synopsis
This book addresses the major healthcare issues of women in their midlife.

Reviewer: HEMANT KUMAR SATPATHY, MD (Saint Joseph Hospital)
Description: This excellent, concise book covers the unique health issues that women face in midlife.
Purpose: The purpose is to discuss midlife health issues of women. The objective is appropriate and the book meets the author's goal.
Audience: Although the book is meant for family practitioners, it would be useful for students and residents. The author has a good grasp of these issues.
Features: This book nicely covers women's health including the physiological changes of midlife, health problems, and cancer prevention. I am impressed with the breadth of topics covered. Looking at the table of contents, I do not think the author missed any health issue of midlife. The best part of the book is the simple language. Each chapter has abundant current references and most of the tables are appropriate and can be quickly accessed. The only constructive comment I have is that the discussions could have been little more in-depth.
Assessment: The author has addressed the health problems in an important stage of female life. There are not many books selectively addressing the women's health in midlife. This book will interest primary care doctors treating women.

From Booklist
Microbiology and immunology are sometimes seen as esoteric and highly specialized sciences with few interpreters to students and the lay public. The authors have selected 600 entries that highlight selected important persons, research facilities, terms, and concepts of both these fields. There are brief biographies of the well known (Salk, Jonas) and the lesser known but important (Mil stein, Cesar); and explanations of common terms (Epidemics and pandemics), uncommon terms (Retroposons and transposable elements), and acronyms like AIDS and SCID (Severe combined immunodeficiency). The entries are in alphabetical order with many cross references. Though there are no bibliographies with the entries, there are 13 pages of book and journal-article citations and 10 pages of Web addresses in the "Sources Consulted" section. This is followed by an 18-page "Historical Chronology" of milestones in human scientific achievement, showing how ancient (circa 10,000 B.C.E.) ideas eventually led to germ theory and the burgeoning of microbiology and immunology through 2002. The extensive, detailed general index indicates the main entries' volume and page numbers in boldface type. Sometimes the same page information is repeated in regular type, an unnecessary redundancy. Using the index one can find that the Irish potato famine is mentioned in the entry on Fungal genetics along with other similarly embedded bits of information. One important, but missing, finding aid is an index to the biographies, as browsing biographies is often a way to interest students in a discipline. The language is straightforward and only as technical as required. The aim is to increase curiosity and interest in these diverse and important disciplines, and to show the development and growing importance of both fields to human health. Though the editors emphasize student use, the major users will probably be persons wanting to learn a bit about terms they hear or read in scientific and medical news. In no way does this publication compete with professional encyclopedias designed for researchers and medical practitioners such as Encyclopedia of Microbiology (Academic, 2000) or Encyclopedia of Immunology (Academic, 1998). Expert researchers and physicians not only describe classic and contemporary laboratory methods for studying tissue repair using a broad range of wound healing models, but also provide sensitive assays for the assessment of tissue healing. The systems detailed include human, animal, in vitro, in vivo, and impaired healing models, as well as models in which underlying systemic and genetic conditions influence the healing process. These powerful models illustrate the biochemical, molecular, and surgical techniques designed for the analysis and manipulation of the healing wound, and provide step-by-step instructions to ensure robust results.

Book Description

----  Laboratories are the source of all medical, pharmaceutical, chemical, and bioscientific research. Scientific English in the laboratory is a prerequisite for efficient communication and successful work. The corresponding terminology for lab facilities, equipment, tools, methods and technology is of equal importance as that of chemicals and safety-relevant issues. The Laboratory Dictionary contains some 12,000 terms in both languages (German – English) that are essential for living, surviving, and working in the lab. The Laboratory Dictionary will prove itself useful in working with manuals, catalogs, and operation instructions delivered with laboratory equipment as much as for reading and writing of scientific publications.
